Coming soon: Life insurance policy for HIV/AIDS patients
CHENNAI: Life insurance for people with AIDS and HIV may soon become a reality. The insurance regulator has issued draft guidelines seeking views and comments from insurers on issuing life cover policies to persons with HIV/AIDS.The draft circular by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority ( IRDA) on policies for people with HIV/AIDS, issued this month, may come into effect from April 2014. Insurers are expected to put in place a board-approved underwriting manual, claims manual, proposal form and other necessary systems before this date....

Increase PG seats to end crisis of specialists: DoctorsNEW DELHI: The crisis of specialist doctors in India is a result of the government's failure to increase postgraduate seats in medical colleges, says Dr Devi Shetty, founder and chairman of Narayana Hrudayalaya in Bangalore.
The Association of Health Providers of India, which is headed by Dr Shetty, has started 'Save the Doctor' campaign in collaboration with the Indian Medical Association (IMA) to demand equalization of undergraduate and postgraduate seats. As of now, there are 46,300 UG seats and 22,000 PG seats - out of which only 10,000 are in non-clinical subjects like anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology and forensic medicine.....
Desi doctors find way to estimate bleeding risk
NEW DELHI: For patients requiring blood thinner drugs there is good news. The risk of bleeding, a major cause of death after a heart surgery or thrombosis in the veins, can now be assessed using a new method developed by Indian doctors.
The Genetic Bleeding Risk (GBR)
score has been developed at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on the basis of
genetic and non-genetic factors associated with bleeding in patients on
long-term blood clotting therapy, said Risha Nahar, scientist at the
hospital's Centre of Medical Genetics....

NEW DELHI: Rajendra Kumar (41) suffers from oral cancer and is in urgent need of surgery to survive. But when Kumar, a tailor, approached the Delhi health department recently for financial assistance he was told to come after elections or after the election commission clarifies on release of funds under Delhi Aarogya Scheme which is to be approved by the state health minister, Dr A K Walia, who is also a candidate for the upcoming elections.....

Centre to SC: Ban all kinds of gutka
NEW DELHI: The Centre on Tuesday made a strong plea before the Supreme Court for passing an appropriate order to ban all kinds of gutka in the country saying they are addictive and harmful even if they don't contain tobacco.
Appearing before a bench headed by Justice G S Singhvi, additional solicitor general Indira Jaising made a forceful submission against manufacturing and selling of gutka products.
