 Copyright Law in India

The Copyright Act, 1957 came into effect from January 1958. This Act has been amended five times since then, i.e., in 1983, 1984, 1992, 1994 and 1999, with the amendment of 1994 being the most substantial. Prior to the Act of 1957, the Law of Copyrights in the country was governed by the Copyright Act of 1914. This Act was essentially the extension of the British Copyright Act, 1911 to India.

23 April - a symbolic day in various ways

UNESCO chose this his day as world book and copyright day to pay a worldwide tribute to books and their authors . The idea for celebrating originated in Catalonia (Spain) where on 23 April, St George's Day, a rose is traditionally given as a gift for each book sold.
(ii)  23 April 1616 was the date of death of Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega.
(iii) 23 April is also the date of birth or death of other prominent authors such as Maurice Druon, K.Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla and Manuel Mejía Vallejo.
UNESCO seeks to promote reading, publishing and the protection of intellectual property through copyright.
Mission: To encourage everyone, and in particular young people, to discover the pleasure of reading and to gain a renewed respect for the extraordinary contributions of those who have furthered the social and cultural progress of humanity.

Irina Bokova, Director General of UNESCO said
Translation is the first step towards the rapprochement of peoples, and is also a decentralizing experience, teaching diversity and dialogue. Translation is one of the driving principles of our creative diversity, which enriches each language through contact with all the others.

India tops dubious list on World Health Day

The World Bank estimates that India has 59% of the people in the world who practice open defecation -- with 626 million, it has more than twice the number of the next 18 countries combined. Open defecation and its contamination of water have been linked to the stunted growth. Indian children are shorter on average than children in Sub-Saharan Africa, even though Indians have better income on average. The India paradox? A rich country with poor health.
